Bernard M. Gordon Tribute
Northeastern University / Boston, MA
Standing thirteen feet tall outside the Snell Engineering Center at Northeastern University, the Bernard M. Gordon Tribute invites both visitors and students to enter its arch. With two glowing LCD screens and bright LEDs that cover the inside of the portal with RLMG designed media, the Gordon Tribute tells the story of eleven influential engineers who revolutionized the spheres of aerospace engineering, computer technology, and communications.
The honored engineers include Northeastern alumni and benefactors as well as notable innovators like Dean Kamen and Kelly Johnson. Their RLMG visualized stories - told through highly designed images, videos, and animated text - play on the LCD screens while complementary graphics surround the visitor on the LED screens.
Designed to withstand the unforgiving Northeastern weather, the portal is housed in an aircraft grade aluminum exoskeleton and is controlled by an intelligent internal cooling system whose remote fans can change the entire volume of air within the portal once every three seconds, saving the electronics from meltdown in summer heat. Both the stories and construction aim to inspire viewers to pursue an education in science, technology, and engineering.
“What we are doing here is honoring people who are not afraid to innovate. We are honoring people who are not afraid of missing trends, because they set the trends.”
