Sketch and Release

The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk / Norwalk, CT

With Sketch and Release, RLMG transformed the entry hall of the Maritime Aquarium into a playful, collaborative space that captures, and releases, visitors’ imaginations.

First impressions matter. With this in mind, the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, CT asked us to create an iconic digital experience to activate the entrance hall of their 140,000 square foot institution, focused on the wildlife and conservation of Long Island Sound. As the first thing visitors encounter when entering the building, this new experience had to make a strong visual impact, introduce the aquarium’s core content messages, and set the tone for interaction in the space. The solution was obvious. Combine a massive video wall with personal and playful contributions from visitors – all in real-time.

Sketch and Release invites visitors to create a sea creature and watch it come to life. RLMG designed templates based on the sharks, fish, seals, sea turtles and squid that live in Long Island Sound. At four touchscreen stations facing a 32-foot LCD video wall, visitors use their fingers to choose a template, paint it with colors and patterns and give their new animal a name.

At the touch of a button, visitors can “release” their creature, transforming it into a 3D animation and sending it to the video wall, where it swims and interacts with up to 100 other visitor-created animals in a dynamic and whimsical underwater scene from the bottom of Long Island Sound.
